East Asia–Australia Trade Sees Capacity Expansion Amid Rising Shipping Demand

Container shipping on the East Asia–Australia trade lane continues to evolve as carriers expand capacity in response to rising cargo demand and sustained freight rates.

Strong shipment volumes across intra-Asia and long-haul trade lanes, combined with congestion at several major ports, have tightened vessel space and kept freight rates elevated. In response, shipping lines are strengthening their service networks to improve capacity and maintain reliable connections between Asia and Australia.

One of the latest developments is the launch of the Australia–China Express (ACX) service by ANL and OOCL, scheduled to commence on 27 July. The service will deploy six vessels with capacities ranging from 3,000 to 4,000 TEU, providing direct connections between Qingdao, Shanghai, Shekou, Melbourne, and Sydney on a 42-day rotation.

Beyond the ACX service, carriers continue expanding their regional networks. ANL’s existing A3N service connects major ports across Japan, China, Taiwan, and South Korea with Australia, while Maersk’s new Qilin service will further enhance connectivity between China and Australia’s east coast.

The additional capacity comes as freight markets remain firm. Recent market indicators show:

  • Shanghai–Melbourne freight rates have risen to approximately USD 1,808 per TEU, more than doubling compared to the same period last year.
  • Busan–Australia rates have reached around USD 3,096 per 40-foot container, reflecting continued market strength.
  • Market quotations for the Far East–Australia trade lane are currently around USD 2,000 per TEU, highlighting ongoing pressure on vessel capacity.

Australia’s container trade also continues to demonstrate positive momentum. South-East Asia has become an increasingly important trading partner, accounting for a growing share of Australia’s container exports and supporting continued growth across the region.

As market conditions continue to evolve, businesses that monitor freight trends and plan shipments early will be better positioned to manage transit times, secure vessel space, and optimize transportation costs.
