The European logistics sector is preparing for a significant network expansion following an agreement between Spain-based Boluda Shipping and Netherlands-based Samskip. Boluda Shipping plans to acquire Samskip, bringing together two established logistics operations with complementary strengths in maritime transportation, port services, and inland freight distribution.
The transaction is expected to be completed on January 1, 2027, pending regulatory approval and the fulfillment of other closing requirements. Until the acquisition is finalized, both companies will continue operating independently.
Expanding Transportation Connectivity Across Europe
The planned acquisition will combine Boluda Shipping’s container shipping and port logistics capabilities with Samskip’s established transportation network across Northern Europe. Samskip operates across short-sea shipping, rail, and road freight, providing connections between major European markets and inland destinations.
The combined network is expected to cover Northern Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and West Africa, with operations extending across 28 countries.
Once integrated, the network is projected to include 32 vessels operating across 18 routes, supported by 21 maritime terminals, five rail terminals, and more than 500 company-owned trucks. The companies also anticipate annual logistics throughput exceeding 750,000 TEUs, with approximately 35,000 containers within the network.
This expanded infrastructure is expected to strengthen transportation links between European ports and inland distribution centers, providing additional options for businesses managing cross-border cargo movements.
Implications for US Importers and Exporters
The acquisition also has implications for international trade between the United States and Europe. Samskip already provides international freight forwarding, ocean freight, air freight, and temperature-controlled logistics services to the US market.
Its American operations serve several key logistics locations, including Norfolk, Virginia; Lynnwood, Washington; and New Brunswick, New Jersey. The company also offers refrigerated cargo consolidation services from locations such as Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Norfolk, and Charleston.
These services are particularly relevant to businesses handling temperature-sensitive commodities, including seafood, meat, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables.
For US importers and exporters, a more integrated European transportation network could provide additional routing possibilities and support cargo distribution beyond major seaports. Combining maritime transportation with rail and trucking services may also help streamline connections between international gateways, warehouses, and final delivery destinations.
Rotterdam’s Role in the Expanded Logistics Network
Rotterdam is expected to play an important role in coordinating the combined European operations. As a major international shipping and logistics hub, the port provides access to extensive maritime connections and inland transportation infrastructure.
Samskip’s established presence in the Netherlands, together with Boluda’s growing operations in Rotterdam, creates an additional foundation for developing connections across European markets.
The integration of both companies’ transportation capabilities is expected to strengthen their presence in regional shipping and inland freight distribution, while maintaining Samskip as part of the combined business.
What This Means for the Global Supply Chain
The planned acquisition reflects the continued development of integrated logistics networks, where ocean transportation, rail freight, and trucking operate as connected parts of the supply chain.
For businesses involved in international trade, transportation connectivity remains an important consideration when selecting shipping routes, managing delivery schedules, and coordinating cargo across different markets.
As logistics networks continue to expand, access to reliable freight forwarding and transportation partners will remain essential for maintaining efficient import and export operations.
