Ocean freight rates on the Asia–U.S. trade lane remain significantly higher than earlier this year, although spot rates from the Far East have started to ease. While further declines are expected in August, freight rates are softening much more gradually than they increased during the recent market surge.
The sharp increase was driven by a combination of geopolitical tensions, changing trade policies, and frontloading activity as importers accelerated shipments ahead of new trade tariffs. This surge in demand placed additional pressure on vessel capacity and equipment availability across major Asia–U.S. shipping routes.
Since late February, spot rates from the Far East to the U.S. West Coast have increased approximately 231% to USD 6,225 per FEU, while rates to the U.S. East Coast have climbed 234% to around USD 8,846 per FEU. During the same period, freight rates to Northern Europe rose 135%, while rates to Mediterranean ports increased 96%, reflecting the broader impact on global container shipping.
Although market conditions are beginning to stabilize, freight rates remain elevated as ocean carriers continue managing capacity while demand gradually returns to more normal levels. With frontloaded shipments easing and seasonal demand showing signs of slowing earlier than usual, future rate movements are expected to be increasingly influenced by the balance between available vessel capacity and cargo demand.
For importers and exporters, the current market highlights the importance of staying informed, planning shipments early, and maintaining flexible logistics strategies to better manage transportation costs and minimize supply chain disruptions.
